Dry Ice is solid CO2, and is much more fun to crush than regular water ice! As the hydraulic press crushes down on the dry ice, the -109°F CO2 instantly heats up and vaporizes causing the dry ice to shatter and EXPLODE!
First, I explain that we are going to be crushing dry ice in the hydraulic press. Then I even teach you how to carbonate your saliva by putting dry ice in your mouth, much to my wife's chagrin. This is dangerous though, its only if you have a quick tongue!
After that we set the dry ice over a pan of very shallow water in order to show the sublimation of the dry ice. As the press comes down and begins to crush the dry ice, the dry ice crumbles and the press metal screams as it rapidly cools. As the pressure builds under the press the dry ice chunks begin to fly!
We have to run to save our camera because we did not set up any barrier for the flying debris. We all survive to crush dry ice another day though.
