Aluminum foil is folded 15 times in a hydraulic press. This creates 32,768 layers of aluminum! In order to separate the layers, a plastic layers is inserted so that, after the folding process, some of the layers can be unfolded revealing how thin they actually are. The theoretical limit for how thin this aluminum gets is about 30 nanometers! This is only 10 times thicker than the diameter of DNA. In the end, the aluminum foil is turned into aluminum flakes by the pressure of the hydraulic press separating the layers of the folded aluminum foil.
When aluminum foil gets very thin it actually can become flammable. This is because the surface area to volume ration is so high. So, there is a lot of aluminum oxidation that happens on the surface. It is likely that even though the aluminum foil was folded 15 times, most of the individual pieces of aluminum were not folded that much. You can see in the video that the the aluminum foil starts flaking as it is being crushed in the hydraulic press. However, the pieces that do stay together are further crushed with each individual fold.
