Fluorescent Protein Glowstick? - Extracting Red Fluorescent Protein Using Ultrasound

The natural world is full of colorful molecules, but few have been used by biologist more than green fluorescent protein and it's beta barrel relatives. Fluorescent proteins come in a literal rainbow of colors and can be both natural and/or artificial in origin.

Last week we built an awesome little bioreacotr and with it we grew 400ml of E coli that produce a cousin of GFP, Red Fluorescent Protein. In this video we go through the basics of protein extraction and show how you go from growth media to final product.

I'll be sending a sample of the purified extract to Nurdrage so he can test and see if fluorescent proteins are viable dyes for glowstick chemistry. We're not expecting it to be very good, but even a flash of light for a moment would be very interesting.
