In the world of biohacking and citizen science, there's a growing propensity for spending all your time making tools, especially through the use of garbage starting material. This is often framed as "opening access" but in reality it's still just garbage. The other issue is that if you spend all your time making these garbage tools, you never end up getting things done, and the repeatability of whatever you've done is much lower.
So in this video I discuss my thoughts on this, the times I've made this mistake and call on those in the community to instead shift the focus to a conversation about which things are worth buying, which are worth buying used and fixing, and which are actually worth building.
