Significant figures (significant digits) tell us how many meaningful digits are in a recorded or calculated value. 3,200,000 can mean anything from 3,150,000 to 3,249,999. If you add 2, you can't report your answer as 3,200,002 and assume you're certain that the last digit is a 2.
