I was playing around with the conditions I used to make the magnetic nanoparticles and stumbled onto this. I need to do more tests but it's a cool starting point. I forgot to mention in the video but the first microscope image was of particles grown for 8 hours, the others were for 24 hours. You can see there's a lot more junk at 24 hours but not many more spiky structures.
