I am lucky enough to know of the where abouts of a few colonies of Calypso orchid (Calypso bulbosa),the fairy slipper or Venus's slipper, member of the orchid family found in undisturbed northern and montane forests. It has a small purple flower accented with a white lip, darker purple spottings. Its name from the Greek signifying concealment, as they tend to favor sheltered areas on conifer forest floors. Calypso orchids are 6" tall and blooms from late March onwards, though in the May. These Orchid Must NOT be removed from the habitat as they have a symbiotic relationship with mycorrhizal fungi.
