Maxwell’s Demon is a thought experiment first proposed by James Clerk Maxwell in 1867. It was used to demonstrate how the second law of thermodynamics could hypothetically be broken. Currently, no technological device exists that actually accomplishes this spontaneous (without energy input) separation of temperature and most scientists agree that one can never be designed.
