How Do Ants Know Where They Are Underground?

How do ants know what hole they are in? Memory? Causality (ie "This hole is full go to the next one")? Very interesting question. A kid and I had a conversation about this while looking at the exhibit in the McWane Science Center in Birmingham, Alabama.
