Many minerals contain iron but are not noticeably magnetic. Using standard geology class tools I devise a method to detect iron without a microscope. I think that you could also use this as a test to determining how much magnetic Iron is present by replacing the penny with a series of known masses once you find how strongly the magnet is attracted you could calculate the quantity of iron.
